Architecture Design Studio 3 [ARC 2118]
Project 1 : Memorials themed ‘Journey of the 5 senses’
INTRODUCTION
Spatial organisation is a key consideration for architects in architectural design. The study and exploration of different spatial organization methods is important in design because it informs human occupation, behavior, and experience within architectural spaces. Writers such as Francis D.K. Ching labeled this as architectural ‘order’ whilst Alexander Purves called this ‘the formal patterns’.
Working in groups of 4-5 students, you are to propose 2 schemes for a Memorial themed ‘journey for the 5 senses’. You are required to design the Memorials in the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial types of your choice. There is no specific site for this design work. The story of your Memorial should translate the narrative of events given by your tutor, and it should be informed by precedents studies.
Project 1a is to analyze two precedent studies, one must be pre-modern movement, and the other contemporary. The precedent studies should be either linear or concentric.
Project 1b is using the design strategies based on the Project 1a, design a memorial themed ‘journey for the five senses’.
OBJECTIVES
1. To explore issues of spatial typologies.
2. To analyse the poetic feelings through simple design exercises.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
-
Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience
-
Identify and analyze case studies to inform the design project
-
Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space
-
Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
-
Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
-
Project 1a: 2 x A3 panels (1 panel for each project) that includes diagrams, photos and minimal annotations illustrating the analysis of your selected precedents
-
Project 1b: 8 x A3 panels (4 panels for each project) that includes Plan(s), Section(s), Images of poetic spaces for each scheme
-
Physical sketch model of the finalized scheme (at an appropriate scale).
-
Butter paper evidence of design process and thoughts through a series of models vignettes
-
Verbal presentation of approximately 15 minutes per group.
-
Precedent Studies of Concentric and Linear

Thomas Jefferson Memorial

Steilneset Witch Memorial Vardo
Designed Memorial Park
In a group of 5, my groupmates and I have separated our work into 2 to each focus on Concentric (Rohinja's memorial park) and Linear (Kota Kinabalu Eathquake's memorial park). To create the poetic atmosphere, we discussed together how do these both incidents appear to us emotionally.
For my group,we decided to emphasize the hardship of Rohinja's journey to Malaysia,we translated one of the incidents which is the death of the 24 people in the Malaysia border as one of the poetic spaces in our design.

Project 2 : Genius Loci : Site Analysis & Concept Development
Introduction
Society, culture, history, memory and the landscape of a particular place echoes the meaning of that ‘place’, or its ‘genius loci’. These qualities will inform the architectural concept and generators for Project 2. In Project 2, the design brief calls for an architectural response toward the sense of place with a strong engagement and relationship to the site and programmatic requirements.
The first assignment for Project 2 requires an analysis of the site context as a starting point. It is a fundamental need for any design project as it will suggest a series of parameters to suggest architectural solution, one that will be appropriate to the place and its meaning, and contributes to its context. The site needs to be understood, in both intuitive and personal ways, as well as quantitative and measured means. Techniques to record and understand the site are varied, from physical surveys to qualitative aspects of experience and personal interpretation of the place
Learning Outcomes
-Produce site analysis which document, interpret and analyze the site context and the ‘genius loci’ of place
-Produce a concept design for a Visitor Interpretive Centre based on the site analysis conclusions.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
-Submit your individual interpretation hand-sketches on 2 x A3 panel.
-Individual Concept Drawings : 1 Plan, 1 Section, 1 Elevation at an appropriate scale, with text to illustrate the concept.
-1 concept model (either physical OR digital), in context with your MICRO site (total 3 x A3 panels + physical model OR 4 x A3 panels, including digital model).
-A 10-minute verbal presentation.

Board 1
Project 2 requires us to find inspiration from the site. I got my inspiration from the overgrowth of the site, seeing that the nature is trying to reclaim its land and heal it by itself and that's when i thought why cant we join in and help the process, creating a better environment for us human and nature.
We start off by coming up with sketches that inspires us from our environment on the site. After that, i started coming up with spatial planning and also the form of VIC.
Project 3 : Genius Loci : Visitor Interpretive Centre
INTRODUCTION
Project 1 introduced and explored the formal and poetic articulation of architecture in a site-less condition. Project 2 established a Design Concept as a driver for architectural development. In Project 3, the design brief calls for an architectural response to design an interpretive centre emphasising a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences and programmatic requirements.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
-Generate design based on the unique character and conditions of the site context
-Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materials/texture
-Design a small scale community building which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and users’ experiences
-Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
-
Each student is to submit 4 A1 sheets (portrait OR landscape) conveying ideas underlying the design, its overall form & space, and its spatial qualities. STUDENTS SHOULD STRICTLY ADHERE TO THE A1 PAPER SIZE.
-
A brief written explanation explaining the thinking behind the scheme
-
Site Plan 1:500 Plan(s), Section(s), Elevation(s) which includes relevant site context at a MINIMUM of 1:100 scale.
-
One photomontage of the architecture within the site context
-
One key 3D image of the interior space of the building to illustrate the poetry of your space
-
A set of set response diagrams that illustrate your design strategy informed by the context
-
A set of diagrams which clearly demonstrate the spatial typology explored, the circulation, the relationship between inside/outside, views and other points which are appropriate to your design project.
-
Precedent studies that informed the design project
-
Integration (graphical information) with Building Science 1 illustrating your design response to the climatic aspects of the site
-
A final sectional model at a minimum 1:100 scale (1:50 preferred, depending on size) which includes relevant site context and an indication of MATERIALS.
