Architecture Culture And History
Project 1 - Precedent study and analysis
INTRODUCTION
This project focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas.
Through the study of existing buildings, students are able to communicate and expand their own
architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts. In a group of 4, we were required to
conduct precedent study analysis on specific building through drawing, model-making, on-line
forum discussion and verbal presentations. This precedent study analysis should help clarify the
research question of “why” that specific building is historically, culturally and architecturally
importance; and “how” the design concepts derived from that particular building can be developed
and expanded to be creatively and innovatively integrated into their Studio 1 design project.
OBJECTIVES
1. To introduce basic architectural theory through a consideration of intentions, concepts,
patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.
2. To creatively and innovatively develop and expand the design concept derived from the
precedent study analysis.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. To produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines,
architectural language and contextual relationships.
2. To produce graphical development, expansion and elaboration of intentions, concepts,
patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships as integration to
design project.

Q5. What material/methods are used for construction?
1) The Flying Buttresses Of Cathedral Beauvais-
a)Further support of the flying buttresses
b)Further Support Of The Flying Buttresses with Iron Rod
2)Glass Of Beauvais
3)The illuminated Nave
Part B: Analysis Presentation Board

ANALYSIS PRESENTATION BOARD (INDIVIDUAL)
After I have selected one element, I analysized my given historic building - Cathedral Beauvais with complete details.
I planned my presentation board in a way that the viewer will be clear of what I want to show. From my board, viewer can see the circulation of space inside the Cathedral Beauvais, which is the usage of space inside the cathedral.
Part C: 3D Abstraction Model

3D ABSTRACTION MODEL (GROUP)
My Groupmates and I have decided to use the grand facade of the Cathedral Beauvais as our abstraction model because this is the part that we can show the important details of the Cathedral Beauvais.
Each of us used the balsa wood and gently make the shape of the facade then carefully carved out the important details of the facade. The area of the model is limited to 30x30cm.
