Building Materials [ARC1713]

Project One-Space Out-The Material Cube

INTRODUCTION

Building material is any material which is used for a construction purpose. This project is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. Students are required to construct cubes using the listed material to explore and understand building making in relation to materials, design considerations of material according to their properties and to finally understand how the intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process.

OBJECTIVES

The task of this project is to design and build two separate paper and wood cube to define a volume of 12”x12”x12” inch space

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Recognize how intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process

2. Effectively work with a material in line with design requirements

3. Be able to express a material within its contextual application

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A)

  • Final full scale Paper and Wood cube exquisitely fabricated and an A2 analytique board  containing:

  • plan 1:5

  • section 1:5

  • elevation 1:5 ( 1 or two elevation, depending on your design)

  • assembly diagram [sequence] scale to be determined

B)

  • A CD (Marked with the project and student name - containing a PDF of the boards and 3 high res, cleaned up photos of the final cube and one photo of the process cubes)

In this exercise, I have explored and came in contact with many different materials and understanding their properties. I used cardboard to make my paper cube and balsa wood to make my wooden cube.

I used the advantage of each cubes to wisely build a cube. The cardboard is easily cut and form so I creatively using the moon to build a cube.

As for the wooden cube, I built the cube with the concept from Frank Lloyd Wright which is his famous usonian house.

I have learnt the different properties of fastening system and how each of them will affect the cube differently.

Project two - Materiality of SPACE: An experiential exploration”

INTRODUCTION

Building material is just about every type of available material that has been used at one time or another for

creating various human homes, structures, and technologies. Many naturally occurring substances, such as clay,

sand, wood, rocks and etc. have been used to construct buildings. Apart from naturally occurring materials, many

man-made products in various compositions are actively used in construction. This assignment is designed to

introduce building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. The spaces or building

selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by certain designer in terms of

concept, functional use, environmental response, environmental profile, structural requirement, availability of

resources and etc. when selecting or proposing a building material. It is also essential for students to see the

transition from vernacular point of perspective to the current application in built environment.

OBJECTIVES

1. To introduce various types of building materials that are being used in the construction practice

2. To create an understanding of the choices designers makes in choosing the building materials based on the properties

3. To further understand the physical and chemical properties of the building materials being used in existing buildings/spaces

4. To expose students to standard construction names/terminologies for materials in a space/ building

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties

2. Identification of various types of building material (Finishes and Structural)

3. Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building

4. Understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept, climate

5. Acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design

6. Understanding of application/ installation of material as finish and structural material (simple construction)

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • The group work (TASK A) must be formatted on A2 paper and compiled in a clear A2 folder

  • The individual work (TASK B) must collated together with TASK A

  • Do not bind the work

  • Please include your names, student id and project title for each work submitted

      Task A

In a group of 4,we went to the a small cafe called the After Black and chosen that location as our building materials project. It's a interesting place because it brought up a curiosity inside of us,why is the cafe opened in the busiest and most crowded place in Subang Jaya. The reason was because the owner of the shop wanted to make an environment that is calm and comfortable for the people that works around there. It's a great location for the workers that are working nearby to have lunch or a 3pm chilling place.

The first board is the mood board which is to put together all pictures that have been taken by us and decorated so that the people who see this board will be directly connected with the ambience of the the cafe.

The second board that we put together included the floor plan, elevation, the origin of the name for the cafe, and we started to line up the materials that can be found in the cafe, with explanations, the checmical as well as physical properties of the materials.

The third board consist introduction of the cafe and as well as the remaining introduction of the materials inside the cafe.

      Task B

This task is an individual project for self discover and annotation for materials. Firstly,we choose a unique space inside of the After Black Cafe and we need to make some research of that space and analyse the space regarding the materials and how that space have effect the experience to the customer.
