Design Communication [ARC 1713]
Project One - On site sketching and techniques
INTRODUCTION
There are two parts of exercise in this project.
In Part A, I learnt that first-hand conscious experience is important in the understanding and articulation of space. This
assessment introduced me to visualization and expression of space through on-site sketching
activity on campus.
In Part B, the sketching techniques have been introduced and used in our sketching of objects.
OBJECTIVES
1. To understand the notion of space in architecture.
2. To develop skills in visualizing of space through observation and perception of a given site
3. To develop skills in sketching as a mode of communication.
4. To learn different techniques for sketching.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Students know how to use different techniques of massing on sketches.
2. The use of light and contrast can be demonstrate through the sketches techniques.
3. Understanding the difference of one-point and two-point perspective.
4. Able to handle the tone of sketching.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
• Each sketch must be drawn in an A4 landscape size sketch paper.
• Select the best 5 sketches

PART A
In this assignment, I was required to sketch four different sketches using either one-point or two-point perspective. Most of my sketches were did on the campus and one was finished near my neighbourhood. After drafting the outline, I used different tone of massing to highlight the contrast in my sketches.
PART B
I was introduced to different techniques of massing, which are scribbling, cross-hatching, stippling and one-direction hatching.
We were all given a small modern house to apply the sketching techniques on drawing and also the shadow itself.
Project Two - Orthographic Projection
INTRODUCTION
Project 2 is to let the students learn how to draft a proper house in architectural way.
In Part A, I was to utilize the given images of a building to be drawn up. By using the skills demonstrated and explained by our tutor, draw up the floor plan, site plan, 4 elevations and 2 cross sections.
In Part B, the Barcelona Pavillion was introduced in isometric and axometric ways. I was given the choice of using either way to explode my Barcelona Pavillion.
In Part C, I needed to collaborate the skills learnt in project 1 to draw out the perspectve of farnsworth house with the reference from Project 2A and 2B.
OBJECTIVES
1. To prove the students can communicate clarity and accuracyof drawn information.
2. To make sure that students understand the quality of line weight.
3. Able to demonstrate gained knowledge, skill and understanding or architectural documentation.
4. Know the appropriate use of technique and scale.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing.
2. Record and present clear and legible architectural information manually.
3. Identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols.
4. Demonstarte in pencil and ink examples of:
-
line types
-
line weights
-
line quality
-
hand lettering
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
-
site plan with roof plan
-
floor plan
-
elevations ( 4 in total comprising of front, back, left & right elevations)
-
cross-section
-
longitudinal section
All drawings to be produced at scale 1:100 except for Site Plan with Roof Plan.

PART A
In our first assignment for this project,we are assigned to draw the floor plan of the Barcelona Pavillion by using technical pen. This required us to master using line weight and rendering skill during the process as well. Our second assignment is to draw out the sections as well as the elevations of the Barcelona Pavillion.
PART B
I exploded the Barcelona Pavillion to visually show the viewer how my interior will be. The platform were clearly shown to show different materials. The techniques of line weight and architecture hand writing were also used in this exercise.

PART C
In this exercise, I need to reuse the skills that I have learnt in Project 1,Project 2A and 2B to produce one-point and two-point perspective of the exterior and interior of Barcelona Pavillion. I used line weight to highlight the shadows of the objects and added some tress to make the sketches look nicer and convincing the viewer to visualize it.

Project Three - Finishing and Presentation
This assessment is integrated with the final project for Design Studio 1. I shall apply the skills and techniques mastered from Assessments 1 and 2 accordingly and appropriately to my skills and to best represent and communicate my final design idea.Asides demonstrating my abilities and skills, I shall also learn to manage and plan my time effectively and work efficiently.
