Building Technology I (ARC2523)

Project 1 - IBS
INTRODUCTION

Truss is a structure built up of three or more members which are normally considered being pinned and hinged at the joints. The following figure shows different types of trusses. Load applied to the truss is transmitted to joint so that each individual members are in either pure tension or compression.

OBJECTIVES

  • To develop student’s understanding of tension and compressive strength of construction materials

  • To develop student’s understanding of force distribution in a truss

  • To design a perfect truss bridge which fulfils the following criterias:

    • High level of aesthetic value

    • Minimal construction material

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Able to evaluate, explore and improve attributes of construction materials

  2. Explore and apply understanding of load distribution in a truss

  3. Able to evaluate and identify tension and compression members in a truss structure

  4. Explore different arrangement of members in a truss structure

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • A4 report should consist of the following elements,- Detailed record of material strength testing/evaluation- Detailed report /photographs of construction of the bridge - Detailed structural analysis of the bridge

  • Suggested Format of A4 Report/Documentation

    • Cover page – Name and student ID number should be written clearly (TU Logo)

    • Table of Content

    • Analysis of material strength

    • Construction of bridge

    • Bridge testing

    • Structural analysis of the bridge

    • Conclusion

    • Appendix – Individual exercise

Project 2 - Construction Solutions (Integration with Design Studio V)

INTRODUCTION

This assignment is aligned with the Studio Design Project (semester 4 and 5) and aims to facilitate students in the technical studies and development of their design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. It also encourages students to think about construction as integral part of the design and not just an afterthought. Most of the times amateur designers tend to design their spaces without thinking about the construction aspects and later on have to change and redesign their schemes due to the designs were not buildable. This assignment was design with the intention to tackle this issue and to increase the technical competency of students.

OBJECTIVES

  • To encourage analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of building technology in the student’s own design.

  • To encourage students to consider the construction aspects throughout the design process.

  • To adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the students’ design.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Analyse and document construction methods and materials

  2. Evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project.

  3. Critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codes of practice, process of assembly, and detailing.

  4. Generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • A3 bound report of the precedent studies and analysis of the construction systems.

  • TWO (2) alternatives of façade design schemes for the current studio design project (included in the A3 report).

  • Fully annotated detail sectional perspective drawing of TWO interesting spaces, one on the ground floor and one on the top floor accompanied by key plans to indicate the location of the spaces.
