Methods of Documentation and Measured Drawings [ARC1215]
Project 1 - Sketch book and Journal
Introduction
This project is an on-site exercise where we have to sketch and document the physical and intangible qualities of the buildings as well as the immediate context of the site. It can be from an element as broad as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of the ornaments used in the building. Some of the physical aspects may include building, architectural elements such as windows, doors, five-foot ways; architectural features such as ornaments, keystone, arches over windows, carvings, tiles layout; construction details such as staircase, roof structure.
As a start, we are required to sketch the plans, sections and elevations of the building that the group has measured, as an expression of the students’ understanding of the building. The sketches are to comprise at least 2 each of these categories:
-The Genius Loci
-Poetic Quality
-Cultural Attributes
-Technical /Construction details
OBJECTIVES
-To train students to be observant to their surrounding
-To instil the culture of documenting as part of the learning process in architectural education
-To enhance the students’ graphic communication skills in capturing important details and the spirit
of the place
LEARNING OUTCOMES
-Being able to recognize historical structure
-Capture the tangible and intangible essence that is contained within the architecture realm
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
-A minimum of 10 pages of sketches on A4 art block or good quality papers spiral bound with a transparent cover at the front and black mounting board at the back.

Project 1 - Measured Drawing
INTRODUCTION
This project will be carried out throughout the semester where we will be assigned to measure and document a historical / heritage building and translate all the data into a set of drawings and a model. Each group will have to only measure one particular building assigned by the lecturer. Apart from doing the measuring exercise on site, we will also need to do additional research in order to piece together all the important data about the building.
OBJECTIVES
1. Aims to produce a set of measured drawings of the assigned buildings in a specific location.
2. A report containing the historical information of the buildings will complement the drawings to be drawn. It is an on-site exercise where students are required to execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the subject, students will be able to:
-Recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation
-Recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation
-Explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements
-Interpret historic architectural element, structure and building
-Execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise
-Translate measured data into scaled drawings
-Produce a report on the buildings highlighting its importance and historical significance
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
2 set of A1 sized drawings (one with dimensions and one without dimensions) and 2 sets of A3 sized drawings (both without dimensions) comprising the following;
-Key plan
-Location plan
-Site plan incorporating the roof plan
-Floor plans
-Elevations
-Sections
-Site sections
-Exploded isometric / axonometric
-A physical model to show the construction / structure of the buildings using ONLY balsa wood OR
-Details – construction, architectural, decorative elements / ornaments (minimum one each)

Project three - Report and Video on Measure Drawing
INTRODUCTION
The report is a document that accompanies the set of drawings for the building that is measured during the semester. Basically, the report will elaborate on the significance of the building being measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. In this report, students are required to relate the architecture of the building to its significance, highlighting how the two support the inhabitation of the building. A video documenting the building is required to provide 3D experience of the building.
OBJECTIVES
-To documents the significance of the building to accompany the measured drawings
-To enable students to analyse the relationship between architecture and the significance of the
building as well as its inhabitation
LEARNING OUTCOMES
-Explain the application of architectural historic document
-Describe architectural cultural heritage
-Elaborate the relationship between architecture and the significance of the building as well as its
inhabitation
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A. Report (3000 to 6000 words)
-2 copies of A4 report in landscape orientation
-3 CD to include the soft copy of the report, the presentation slide, the presentation recording, 50
photos of the building (captioned) and the video. Please insert it in a plastic casing with a printed cover with the group info
